The Charlotte County 2024 report states that the regional authority sells water to Charlotte County, the City of North Port, DeSoto County and Sarasota County. So if you’re on county supply, you’re drinking treated Peace River water the same as Port Charlotte is.
Inside the city, you’re on aquifer water that has been through reverse osmosis and softening at the plant.
Those two arrive at a tap differently, and a system specced for one isn’t automatically right for the other.
Your address decides which, and that’s the first thing a test establishes.

Neither utility reports hardness. It isn't a regulated contaminant.
Softened At The Plant, Still Hard At The Tap
City of Sarasota does more treatment than most utilities in this region, and it still arrives hard enough to scale a heating element.
That surprises people. The assumption is that if the utility softens it, the job’s done.
Softening at a plant is about protecting the distribution system and hitting a target, not about getting your glassware spotless.
Which is why we test at the tap rather than reading the report. The report tells you what left the plant. It can’t tell you what crossed town and came through your own pipes.
City and county are two different supplies
County water is Peace River, same as Port Charlotte
Neither utility publishes a hardness figure
Frequently Asked Questions About Sarasota County
How do I know if I'm on city or county water?
Look at your water bill. It'll say City of Sarasota or Sarasota County, and that's the whole answer. If you rent, or the bill goes to somebody else, we can usually work it out from the address when we come out.
Is county water the same as what Port Charlotte gets?
Broadly, yes. Charlotte County's own 2024 report says the regional authority sells water to Charlotte County, the City of North Port, DeSoto County and Sarasota County. Same river, same treatment plant, different distribution once it leaves.
Do both supplies use chloramines?
Not the same way. The regional authority disinfects with chlorine and chloramines, so county customers get both. City of Sarasota adds free chlorine before it leaves their plant. It's part of why the two taste different to people who've moved across the line.
