The City of Venice runs its own reverse osmosis plant. Brackish water out of intermediate aquifer wells, pushed through a membrane before it ever heads your way.
RO takes most of the hardness with it. So if you’re on city supply here, your water’s generally softer than a house a few miles inland.
That’s unusual around here. Worth knowing before somebody quotes you a system sized for Port Charlotte water.
It’s also why the complaint we hear most in Venice isn’t scale. It’s chlorine. That goes in after treatment, to keep things clean on the trip to your house.

So What Do You Actually Need Here?
Less than a lot of the county, if you’re on city supply. The plant already took most of the hardness out.
What it didn’t take out is the chlorine they add afterwards. That’s a filter job, not a softener job.
And not every Venice address is on city water. Step outside the city and you’re on county supply or your own well, and those read completely differently.
So the honest answer depends which side of the line your house sits on. The test settles it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Venice
Is Venice city water hard?
Less than you'd think. The City of Venice runs its own reverse osmosis plant on brackish wells out of the intermediate aquifer, and RO takes most of the hardness with it. So if you're on city water in Venice you're usually better off than folks a few miles away. Not everybody in Venice is on city water though.
Why is my water different from my neighbors?
Because you might not be on the same system. The City of Venice serves its own customers off that RO plant. Head just outside and you're on county water or a private well, and those are different animals entirely. It really can change street to street around here.
Do I still need anything if Venice water is already RO treated?
Sometimes. The plant handles hardness and dissolved solids before it ever reaches you. What it doesn't handle is the chlorine they add for the trip through the pipes, or sediment your own older plumbing kicks loose. If the taste bugs you or you're seeing grit, there's still something to fix.
