You Might Need Less Softener Than You Think

Venice runs its own reverse osmosis plant. If your house is on city water there, your hardness is already lower than a neighbor a few miles inland.

Most of the region isn’t so lucky. City of Sarasota blends reverse osmosis with softening at the plant and it still arrives hard. Punta Gorda treats surface water out of Shell Creek. Charlotte County runs Peace River water through the regional plant.

Same region, four different waters, four different answers about what a house needs.

You won’t find your hardness in the county report either. Those only cover regulated contaminants, and hardness isn’t one. Charlotte County’s 2024 report lists fluoride, nitrate, barium, sodium and selenium, and no hardness at all.

So we test your tap before anyone talks about equipment. Sometimes the answer’s a full softener. Sometimes it’s less than you walked in expecting.

01

We Test

Free in-home test for hardness, chlorine and iron. You get the numbers on the spot.

02

We Size It

Off your actual hardness and how many people live in the house, not off a chart.

03

We Install

Fitted on the main line, usually the garage, so every tap in the house is covered.

What Scale Does To Your Water Heater

Scale builds inside the tank and coats the heating element. Now your heater’s working through a layer of rock to warm your water, so it runs longer and burns more power every year.

Then it fails early. That’s usually the most expensive thing hard water does to a house.

One thing worth knowing before you buy. A salt softener adds sodium to your water, and Charlotte County’s 2024 report already puts sodium at 48 ppm before any softener touches it. If somebody in the house is watching their salt, say so and we’ll spec around it.

The unit itself isn’t the interesting part. Getting the size right is.

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Softeners

Most houses, yes, but not all of them and not to the same size. It depends what your tap actually reads. A house on Venice city water and a house on a Port Charlotte line are not starting from the same place, and we have walked away from jobs where the number did not justify the equipment.

Your water's already safe to drink. A softener isn't a purifier. All it does is pull out the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. It doesn't touch chlorine and it doesn't touch anything you'd worry about health wise. If you want better tasting water, that's a reverse osmosis unit under the kitchen sink. Plenty of folks run both. They're doing two different jobs.

Longer if it was sized right in the first place. A unit that is too small regenerates constantly and burns through its resin years early. That is the main reason we ask about hardness and household size before quoting rather than after. Day to day, the only thing you do is keep salt in the brine tank.
