Why Does My Well Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

Water Testing

Hydrogen sulfide. That’s the whole answer, and it’s a gas that sits naturally in groundwater across this part of Florida.

You’ll notice it worst in a hot shower, because heat drives the gas out of the water and into the air. Cold taps often smell like nothing at all, which is why people think it comes and goes.

Some houses only smell it on the hot side. That’s a different problem, and it’s usually a reaction inside the water heater itself involving the anode rod. Same smell, different fix.

At the levels we find in wells around Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto County, it isn’t a health hazard. It’s a quality of life problem and a plumbing problem. Hydrogen sulfide is corrosive over time and it’ll work on copper and steel fittings.

It also doesn’t respond to a water softener. If somebody told you softening would fix the smell, it won’t. Softeners handle hardness and nothing else.

Softeners handle hardness and nothing else. Hydrogen sulfide needs its own stage.

How To Tell Where It's Coming From

Run the cold tap and smell it. Then run the hot.

If both smell, it’s in the water coming out of the ground, and it needs treating where the water enters the house.

If only the hot smells, look at your water heater before you look at your well. The anode rod inside can react with sulfur bacteria and produce the gas on its own. Replacing the rod sometimes solves it outright.

If it smells at one fixture and nowhere else, that’s usually a drain problem rather than a water problem. Worth checking before anybody quotes you equipment.

A Softener Won't Fix It

Softeners remove hardness. Hydrogen sulfide needs its own stage.

What Actually Removes It

Aeration, oxidation or a dedicated media filter, depending on how much gas is in the water and what else the well is carrying.

The important part is where it sits in the sequence. Sulfur removal goes at the front of a well system, before the softener, because iron and sulfur will foul softener resin if they reach it.

Get the order wrong and the softener fails early. That’s the most common reason well installs go bad around here.

We test for it free, and the reading decides the stage rather than the other way round.

Frequently Asked Questions About Why Does My Well Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

Not at the levels we see in wells around here. It's unpleasant and it corrodes fittings over time, but it isn't a health hazard. What it is, is a sign nobody has tested your well.

Usually because you're noticing it in hot water and not cold. Heat drives the gas out where you can smell it. The concentration hasn't changed, your nose just gets a better shot at it.

Sometimes, briefly, if bacteria are the cause. It rarely holds. If the sulfide is coming up dissolved out of the aquifer, no amount of shocking touches it and you need treatment at the house.
